Many people may find Medicare confusing, but understanding how it works can make a significant difference. The first thing to know is that Medicare isn't automatic, and it doesn't just "happen". Your Medicare card will not automatically come to you in the mail.
And you cannot, enroll in a Medicare plan unless you have your Medicare card.
What you need to do to get Medicare
You need to have your Medicare card in order to enroll in a plan. To get the card, you need to register at https://www.SSA.gov. It is very important to register at least three months before your 65th birthday.
When you turn 65, understanding the enrollment timelines is critical. The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) spans seven months: three months before your birthday, your birthday month, and three months after. Missing this window may lead to penalties in your premium when you finally decide to enroll.
